The role of a librarian in the Elementary School is to advocate for reading and learning by exploring the world of literature through folklore, fantasy, poetry, illustrations and open up the world of information to students. The librarian engages with the students through read-alouds, puppet shows, digital stories, readers theatre, using the broad scope of children’s literature.

Stories shared with young children kindle their curiosity as Walt Disney puts it succinctly, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island“.

Starting young, the librarian uses appropriate teaching and learning strategies to support project work and inquiry-based research projects. Through team teaching, the librarian collaborates with teachers to teach research skills and academic honesty principles.

The librarian embeds the skills and concepts of language and information literacy & media to help students become meta-literate in this digital information world.
