Discovery College, a school in Hongkong, was known as one of the most significant educational foundations. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be a part of this phenomenal school. My journey started four years ago in the most vibrant & lively room in the college, none other than the D.C. Library.
Plenty of big and small celebrations happen throughout the year in Discovery College, but none of it matches with Book Week, proudly hosted by the Discovery College Library. Book week culminates at the end of term one, which also happens to be the longest-term & places everyone in the spirit of Christmas.
Our book week comprises a magnitude of activities for both the Primary & Secondary students. As part of our celebration, we host a bilingual bazaar. It gives parents, teachers, and secondary students a fantastic opportunity to read a story in their mother tongue to their fellow college mates. One of the well-known competitions for secondary students is our Bookish bake-off, a literature-inspired baking competition. Budding bakers are invited to try their hand at creating a book-related baked masterpiece. Another popular competition is the “Guess Who”, where students find the mystery teacher behind the books!
Our literary week consists of morning quizzes, scavenger hunts, emoji quizzes, guess the silhouette, door decorations, bookmark competitions, word searches & crossword puzzles. After two years of Covid restrictions, we had the privilege of not 1 but 3 author visits! We celebrated this literary week from 13th to 17th of December, 2021.
Mr. David Greenberg filled up the assembly with his poetry, Mr. Nury Vittachi shared his journalism & research stories, and Mr. Jay Dring spoke about the importance of the Chinese language at the workplace. One of the most critical parts of Book Week and a finishing touch to the celebrations is the character parade. This year our theme was “Old worlds, New worlds & Other worlds” Teachers and students will dress up as their favourite book hero or author and celebrate the end of Book Week.
